Terravesta commissioned Darlston to build a system that enables the owners of the company to spend their time developing the business and the industry they spearhead rather than on micro-managing the day-to-day tasks conducted by the business' employees.

Terravesta identify and work with suitable farmers to grow Miscanthus, a sustainable energy crop. Once harvested, Terravesta then manage the whole supply chain, ending in the production of energy at UK based processing plants. Terravesta take a scientific approach to all of their work and put a lot of work in upfront to maximise productivity. Terravesta commissioned Darlston to build a system that enables the owners of the company to spend their time developing the business and the industry they spearhead rather than on micro-managing the day-to-day tasks conducted by the business’ employees.

When building a bespoke system for Terravesta, Darlston phased the project into several deliverables:

  1. Intelligently sourcing growers by conducting a GIS analysis of land owners, soil suitability and distance to Miscanthus processors.
  2. Automating the production of individually tailored forecast documents which outlined the long-term profit for the growers based on the above GIS analysis.
  3. A CRM system which tracked the communications to growers and which embodied the sales pipeline from first contact to site visit to signed contract.
  4. An offline system for conducting site surveys on location with the grower using an iPad – all the data and images from which would automatically sync to the CRM system.
  5. A system for automating the production of contractual documents for the growers.
  6. A system for managing the collection of harvested Miscanthus including journey planning, the mapping of harvested bales to inform collecting decisions, reporting on collected weights and moisture contents, reporting on achieved yields over time, etc. This system would also require Terravesta’s processors to be able to securely log in and log collected weights.

Additionally, for a system to be successful it was also ascertained that the following would be necessary:

  1. No spreadsheets!
  2. One system, not several discrete applications that do not talk to each other.
  3. Must be intuitive with little requirement for training.
  4. Must be secure.
  5. Must be able to quickly evolve with Terravesta’s rapidly growing business.

Darlston delivered all of the above in a series of staggered phases that fitted Terravesta’s goals. We continue to work closely with Terravesta as their business evolves – making sure that the system we built for them evolves with them. Like every business, Terravesta’s business is unique. The processes that they have developed are their tried-and-tested techniques, techniques which no off-the-shelf software would deliver. Darlston’s bepsoke approach to business systems delivered what was required quickly and to the agreed deadlines. Using the Salesforce platform as the foundation for the project allowed us to create something intuitive, robust, reliable and secure.
